Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness helps me acknowledge that my emotions are true and they are not separate. They're not difficult. They are not foreign. They're part of me and valid.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I don't like breathing. I don't like Anapanasati. Actually, I think it's a really boring practice. And I haven't yet figured out why people do it. Because it just seems to not be one that I like.

Bullying Story
- I have been bullied a lot throughout my life. That's been probably the one consistent theme. It started in my family, it kept going at school, and then it went all through work. And I think that I am a feminist, but I think there is something about women, that is not always kind.
- What I did is I put up with the bullying, and I applied my daily practices. So there's something called the 37 practices of a bodhisattva and I converted them into a phrasing. And I used to recite them every morning before my meditation practice. And that helped me. So if I wanted to bite back or bitch or whatever, that stopped me.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has given me the clarity to see my emotions and what causes them. I used to be very anger forward. A lot of things made me angry and resentful and I was very judgmental.
- Mindfulness has given me the clarity to see the parts of me that held those beliefs, that held those emotions, and what they need. When you can see that, you can start to heal them.
Thoughts on Breathing
- For bodybuilding, breathing is an absolute must. if you cannot breathe and breathe and rhythm with the movement that you're doing, you can't do the movement. So there is a very meditative practice of when you're lifting weights, when you're pushing heavy weight, when you are exerting your body to its limits, you need to have that calm peacefulness of mind.
- My coach is a famous former bodybuilder and he is very spiritual. And he has been teaching me this mindfulness because you have to move through a lot of discomfort to be able to do this. Having mindfulness and a calm, peaceful mind with breath to allow the body to have what it needs, and to calm the mind is so critical.

Bullying Story
- I was recently in a job working for a man who I really admired but I knew that he had a lot of emotional problems. A lot of the time he would kind of manipulate people emotionally by being very aggressive and make you feel like you were doing something wrong.
- There was a situation where he was acting out with one of our employees and not sabotaging things, just because he couldn't move past this issue he had. And so I confronted him about it and was like, hey, the way that you're acting is not helping. But let's figure out what we need to do to find what's wrong with the situation and come to it.
- He went after me, saying, because you're too soft, and you don't have what it takes to get things done. He said these people don't need to be coddled, and it was very frightening. The one thing I was able to really do was to be able to stay open and listen to the message behind what he was saying.
- Through being really mindful, staying calm, present, very direct, and very kind, bullying cannot stand up to kindness. If you can meet them with kindness and compassion, they just fizzle.

Effect on Emotions
- I do a lot of digging about what I'm feeling. And it's usually never one thing. It's usually many things. So there's a term and emotional intelligence, or neuroscience, feel it to heal it.
- Therefore there's the feeling of it, and then there's the naming of it, name it to tame it. So I do both. I focus on what it is and feeling it, you know, what in my body, like, where is it? Am I tracking it somatically? Therefore
Thoughts on Breathing
- One of the things that I teach and that I practice is what I call pattern interrupts. A pattern interrupt doesn't have to take a long time. What I encourage people to do and I do is three conscious breaths throughout my day, if I can remember to. When I have more time, I do other practices.
- Breath is huge for me, just really calming down using kind of the Andrew Weil is the 478 technique four inhale seven, hold, eight, exhale. Therefore

Bullying Story
- I have a coaching client who was brought to me because he had issues. It might be called bullying, or he had very little ability to react. He came across as a bully with people who were his subservience whether it was a staff or student. I was just starting to work with him, and he did it to me. I had asked him to do a number of things as part of our coaching agreement. I asked him to do a lot and he was a busy guy. And what I got back was intense. Therefore
- I was thinking, I just blew it with a coaching client. And I had to work by myself. So when talking about mindfulness, what I do is, swim. So I went swimming, and intense exercise is often one thing I will do when I'm feeling it. And then I had to talk to myself about that. And once I started talking to myself, and kind of calming down, I went, that was kind of amazing that this happened, if I'm his coach, I got an experience of it. Yes.
- So we were able to talk about it in our next session from me being more present and grounded and having to apologize to him because I realized I was asking a lot, but also for him to see. I asked him, What was your intention? And what you said to me in that email, he said, Well, it was very unfair what you were doing. And I said, would you like to know what the impact of that was? He said I guess. So I said, on a scale of one to 10, that's probably nine for me. So it actually began a real conversation. I mean, I think that was the moment he started to trust me. But those are skills that I now have that I didn't have when I was young. So

Effect on Emotions
- Not to be so hot-tempered so quickly and to actually think before I act, which is something that I didn't do before my earlier age. If it's somebody who's annoying you or they're trying to get you because there are a lot of people when they know this, they ask. He tried to get a reaction. And I know that sounds crazy, but it's true. You have to be the bigger person. Definitely breathe, take a step back, and watch what I do before I react.
Thoughts on Breathing
- So if it gets that way, I just step back, breathe, sit there and just think and bring myself back to the center where I am at that point. My Apple watch helps because it seems to sense when it is that time to breathe.
- So there is a pop-up that says, Hey, take a minute to breathe, and there's a whole app for that. You hit the button, you start to breathe in, and it calms you down. So it's just a reminder every day, like I said, the beginning to be mindful of where you are, center yourself, and bring you back. You realize that the situation you're in is not as bad as it seems.

Bullying Story
- When I was younger, I did have a kid who rode my bus and found it fun to antagonize me every day. So he would actually ride the bus with me to get off all my stops, just to run me down and snatch all my books out of my hand and tackle me on the ground.
- I was probably in the sixth grade, and mindfulness was nowhere near me. And so one day, I finally got tired of it, and in the middle of the field, I laid him out. I sprung my hand for six months. That's how hard I hit him.
- So mindfulness at that point probably would have helped me calm down, and I probably would have found a different way to handle that. And I wouldn't have hit him. But the thing I always tell everybody is when you do certain things to somebody for so long, the reaction that you get is not going to be the one that you want. So I think then, yes, violence is never the answer of any kind. But it certainly would have helped if I had had mindfulness in life.

Effect on Emotions
- This is something I'm working on so much, just the awareness of them, the awareness that it's just an emotion and that it's normal and okay. There's judgment behind it. I can make this into something better than what it is right now.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I will notice immediately if I'm not taking a deep breath like all of us, I just do this like a gasp of air. That is something that I've been much more purposeful about in my day. And it's something that I do before I jump into my day before I do my brain dump list. If I start feeling that overwhelmed feeling during the day, I always start with a few deep breaths, because it's just that perfect moment to reset. What am I doing? Am I being intentional?

Bullying Story
- I think about bullying as I was a Catholic school kid who transferred into a public school and immediately got the identity of the ‘goody two shoes'. I was always smart and I've always loved time management. I love the little planners you'd get when you're in middle school. Because of being a new kid; I was a bit unaware of a lot of the things that public school kids were aware of because I was from a really small Catholic school. That just made me a target immediately right off the bat.
- I think looking back, my choice was to lean into that identity versus not fighting against it. But I just made it. I leaned into that identity to just make it easier to soften the blow of what the kids were saying, versus saying like, No, I'm actually much more complex than that. And I'm not going to let myself be put into any kind of box.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has allowed me to not villainize people, places, things, and ideas that shouldn't be villainized it's allowed me to pinball a thought around my brain and then let it land accurately in a constructive place, not a destructive one.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I have been way more mindful of breathing, to the point where now I have mouth tape that I put over my mouth when I go to sleep because I'm trying to breathe more through my nose. And I occasionally snore, which my wife does not like. And I understand that.
- When I'm speaking, I oftentimes don't take breaths for long periods of time. So being more mindful of that is powerful as well.

Bullying Story
- I think I was a freshman in high school, and I got glasses and never had glasses before. The first day I ever had my glasses, I didn't know really even know what that meant. Yeah. And I think that's a situation; when you're that young, there isn't a lot of mindfulness. Honestly, you're kind of thinking of where I fit in in the pecking order of the school. And where's my ego?
- I think mindfulness of the understanding that both sides I villainize that person, how dare you make fun of me? Why are you bullying me? When in reality, a more mindful approach that I might take now is to ask, what's going on with you that makes you feel like you need to lash out and try to hurt me?

Effect on Emotions
- I could say, thanks to mindfulness and all those four-month meditation retreats 12 hours a day, I don't have negative emotions anymore. They have helped decrease negative emotions a little bit, but I have turbulent emotions. That's why I started meditating; I could not control the anxiety and the racing mind and then the grief and the pain.
- Meditation has helped me relate to the unpleasant emotion with more wisdom in seeing it back to that via surfboard or log,. I'm being tossed around by these turbulent emotions. But can I be a surfboard? Because I don't know how to stand on once will actually be the surfboard and say, ‘this is really painful'.
- There's tons of anxiety present or tons of anger or tons of sadness present and it hurts. But this too shall pass. And having developed some meditation skills over the years, I can now meditate in the midst of the anxiety and in a more lovingly detached way, watch the storm.
Thoughts on Breathing
- What helps me is ‘The three breath and hug'. Stand face to face, embrace deeply, breathe in for one slight beat at the top. Breathe out for one at the same time. And repeat twice. My hubby and I try to do it multiple times a day. It is a beautiful way to bring breath and all this esoteric teaching into an immediate way to connect. Let go and begin again.

Bullying Story
- I was a bullied kid. First of all, my parents sent me to the only good school in our neighborhood, which was a Catholic school, and I was the only non-Catholic. So all the other kids told me I was going to hell. And then, because I'm a great little monkey gifted with a very bright mind, after kindergarten, two months into grade one, they booted me up to grade two.
- I would sit alone on this swing set, swinging and crying and reading a book and with no friends. What I think, as someone who has been bullied, which is every single person listening, including if they were a perpetrator of bullying as a young person.

A Most Mindful Creature
- When you are in the presence of a dolphin or whale, it is literally impossible to think about anything else. You are in that present moment.
- If you're on a boat, and there are dolphins right in front of the boat surfing, righting the bow waves, looking and turning to look up at you, and making eye contact, that is a most mindful experience.
Wisdom From The Sea Oracle Deck.
- Anne: I have a brand new Oracle Card Deck called Wisdom From The Sea. I have been trained as a certified Dolphin Energy Healer. It's like any other kind of energetic healing like Reiki. I consciously ask the dolphins and the whales to send their powerful healing energy through me.
- I'm somebody who is not sensitive to energy. I can't see it or feel it. Some people can see auras, but not me. What I do get is, in my mind, it's like watching a mind movie that the dolphins and whales send me, a series of images and messages for my client. Oracle card decks are great if you have a challenge, a question, or if you just want some guidance.
Swimming With Whales
- When we swim with whales, we're not swimming, we're floating, and they're swimming around us. There's nothing we can do to keep up with a whale when it wants to swim.
- Usually we'll find a mom and a calf and Mom will go down and just rest. But baby has to come up more often for air than mom does. So when baby comes up for air, sometimes it'll come take a look at us and they'll wonder, ‘what are you guys doing here?'
- We met a baby and that was amazing. Now we're not allowed to touch the wild whales, right? Well, this little baby did not read that memo and it literally came to every single one of us and touched us and reached out. He literally reached out his pectoral fin to me and it was inches from my face. And I just gently laid my hand on its pectoral fin. And she went inches from a number of my group. Everybody in my group touched this baby whale or the baby whale touch them. It was the most amazing experience.
Words of Wisdom
- “I'm seeing in my mind's eye, this beautiful eye of a whale that's looking directly at you and just beaming you so much love and to let you know that you are loved, you are not alone, and the whales and dolphins are here to support you and guide you. All you have to do is ask”.

In fact, I'll have to connect you with John Mensa who was a fantastic breathwork teacher. And, of course, traditional mindfulness meditation also incorporates a lot of mindful breathing.

Bullying Story
- I wish mindfulness had been taught when I was in school. It would have made an enormous difference because I've lost count of the number of times I would go back home to my room, just feeling absolutely awful about what had happened at school. I felt belittled and I felt so small.
- So the way that mindfulness would have had a tremendous impact is by reminding me that I am not the feelings I'm having. I'm not the thoughts that I'm having. The mere fact that these are entities that I am having implies separation between the ‘I', and what is being felt and being experienced. Having that healthy ability to observe rather than identify and react would indeed have allowed me to feel what I needed to feel in a healthier way, as opposed to going for avoidance as my MO.
