Effect on Emotions
- I will be really honest, this is still a work in progress for me. I noticed that I'm a lot kinder to myself about certain emotions. And then I also noticed that there are other emotions where I can beat myself up still. Then I'm just noticing the judgment that's still there. And like, okay, like, this is still here. This is something that, I can still work on, but then it's almost like not judging myself for the judgment. So can be a few layers there.
Thoughts on Breathing
- That's a good one. Because I do think breath can help us a lot with sex. Oftentimes, in bed or not, we can kind of tense up and almost be holding our breath. And a lot of people tend to do that leading to orgasm, especially if you're somebody who maybe struggles with orgasm. Try deep breathing, try relaxing your muscles a little bit, and just see how the energy flows with that. Sex and Consciousness
- But with me, I've done all sorts of different breathing. I've done some, like Holotropic breathwork workshops that I've attended. I've gone through periods where I do the Wim Hof YouTube video in the morning. Dr. Andrew Weil has the 4-7-8 breathing technique for relaxation. Sex
- I noticed when I'm stressed, my breathing is more shallow and tense. And it's like a clue to me, like a signal that I can relax a little more.

Bullying Story
- I've seen this more than once, where one partner is kind of pestering, coercing or manipulating their partner to have sex with them. Now that you're kind of bringing mindfulness to it. I actually think that's a huge component because one of the main reasons I got into sex therapy is because I think the way the culture is, there's a lot of shame and stigma around certain aspects of sexuality. Sex and Consciousness
- It could actually think male, bisexuality is one of those. I think there's a lot of men who have interest in some other men, but you know, are kind of told like, No, you're either gay or straight. There's no woman who can be bisexual. So I think that when there's an area of shame or stigma, or when someone's feeling hurt, and rejected, and maybe doesn't have the capacity, or the training or the skill set to be with that because I think mindfulness is a lot of that is being with whatever your experience is, they kind of gets more emotionally reactive. Sex and Consciousness
- And I think that's where sexual bullying can come in. So I think if people are able to develop the capacity to accept themselves, to not judge their own sexuality, to not take their partner's maybe lack of interest personally, and you just see that, like, that's what's going on in their mind, you know, looking away that has nothing to do with you. And to process any hurt that you have without judging it. I think that's huge.
- So I feel like when you do that, it really frees you up to have great sexual communication, which is, you know, another topic on my early podcast. Because it's key, it's like, if you can communicate well about sex, you're gonna probably have a pretty good sex life.

Embrace Peace This Season
Monday Dec 12, 2022
Monday Dec 12, 2022
Embrace Peace is the topic for today. What are we truly searching for? Is it happiness, joy, bliss, or maybe it’s comfort, elation, or satisfaction? The meanings of a lot of those words overlap. I don’t feel like it’s normal to feel blissful all the time. Bliss is at the high end of the happiness scale. Then there’s contentment and peace and calm. That’s at a different place on the happiness scale. I believe, for most people, being calm and focused is part of being happy. I also think being calm and focused is part of having inner peace.

What Are We Searching For?
During the holiday season, we hear a lot about peace. We notice the word in songs and movies and just as an expression when someone says, they just want to experience some peace in their lives.
Peace comes from within. As we learn how to find happiness and joy, we start to realize that inner peace is at the root of all the good feelings we’re looking for.
After interviewing over 750 guests for Mindfulness Mode, some common themes have started to become obvious. One of those themes is that if I am living with contempt for myself, at any level, it negatively affects everything about my life. It certainly affects how I treat others and how good I feel about my life.
Love Yourself?
I’m sure you’ve heard people say that ‘to truly love others, you have to love yourself’. When I first heard that, I thought it sounded strange, and I realize I’m not the only one who had this reaction. Whether you call it ‘loving yourself’, or ‘being positive about who you are’, or ‘avoiding self-bullying’, all of those perspectives are similar. To move towards a happier, more peaceful life, it’s necessary to start liking yourself, or loving yourself, as the phrase indicates.
One of the ways to start feeling more positive towards yourself is to feel and show compassion as much as possible, in as many circumstances as possible. One of my mantras is centred around seeing everyone and everything, with compassion. It’s easy to be compassionate about family members you love, or even random strangers. But try having compassionate thoughts about someone who hates you or has inflicted harm on you. That’s when it becomes really challenges and requires daily practice.
Embrace Compassion
Once you can start to feel compassion even towards the most difficult people and situations, you will start to have more kind thoughts about yourself. If there is someone in the world who hates you, remember that the hate they hold is about them, not about you.
This is easy for me to say, but not as easy to truly grasp and live by if someone in your life hates you. A person who holds hate is filled with inner hate themselves and they don’t have any idea how to find inner peace and happiness because they are so filled with anger and hate.
What About Grief?
Let’s talk about grief. Grief can be overwhelming and can make you feel like there is no hope. Grief has to be embraced and we have to live with the pain and experience the darkness that grief brings. Some people sink deeply into their grief and take months or years to come out the other side.
Other people can experience grief for less time and then move forward. You’ve heard guests on the show talk about feeling the pain and moving toward the pain instead of trying to resist it. When you try to resist the pain, it lasts longer and can be more intense. Zig Ziggler was know to say, ‘What you resist, persists’.
Feeling Sad?
During this holiday season, you’ll hear all kinds of happy reminders of the season, including sleigh bells, cheerful song lyrics, partying, happy celebrations. Does all this ‘happiness’ make you sad or bring you down? That’s not unusual. You share this trait with hundreds and thousands of people.
Notice how you are feeling in your body about this happiness around you. Does it make you angry? Does it cause hurt and pain somewhere in your body? Narrow down the area of your body where you feel this pain and anguish. Close your eyes and think about the pain and anger in your body that is related to the happiness of the season you’re constantly being reminded of.
Body Scan
Now narrow that feeling down even more. Is it in your neck or shoulders? Is it in your chest? Maybe it’s in your gut or your lower back, or your knees. Do you feel an ache?
Take the time to do a body scan. Go to a safe, quiet place, close your eyes and begin to notice how you feel in each area of your body. Start with your head, your forehead, and your temples. Then move down your body and be aware of any pain or discomfort in each body location.
You can repeat this practice until you are aware of where the most pain resides in your body. If you meditate, this can be part of your meditation practice. You will become more and more aware of where the most pain and anger reside in your body. Allow yourself to move toward the pain. Embrace what your body is experiencing and focus on it.
Wishing You Peace
Spend time with others who have this sense of peace that I’m talking about. You’ll experience this in animals as well as humans. Other beings can be very calming and comfortable to be around, or some can have the opposite effect. Put some effort into being around those who are calm and peaceful and you’ll start feeling more calm and peaceful as well.
As we move through December, I wish you the very deepest level of peace that you can possible achieve, whatever PEACE means to you. It may be happiness, a form of bliss, a feeling of calmness or focus, but more than anything, I wish you peace.

- I remember one day, I got a flat tire. I changed the tire, and I let it bother me all day long. Then I thought, why am I worrying about something that's already done? So now, my mind is in a different place. Now I can change it, I changed it and move on with the rest of my day. So
Thoughts on Breathing
- It is funny because I was just telling someone this the other day. They were building up some stress on something, and I suggested to just breathe. A lot of times, when we go through a lot of things, we stop ourselves from breathing normally. If we allow ourselves to breathe normally, we notice a central call that comes over. If and when that call comes over, then we can start to think clearly and get things done appropriately. So

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness and mindful art, just because I combined them so commonly, have been hugely supportive for me through my own emotional journey. When I was a teenager, I started actually doing oil painting with Bob Ross at home. I think he's a master, mindful art teacher, one of the first that I remember when I would paint these happy trees and play with my own creative world on the painting and noticing things, that I would feel so much calmer, and relaxed, and was able to work through a lot of anxiety that I had at the time.
- In my late 20s, I had a cancer diagnosis. And I went through surgery and radiation. And at that time, I really discovered a practice of combining mindfulness with collage and writing and a lot of self-reflection. And that was so huge for me to be able to sit with the emotions and the grief that I had at the time around all of that and to be able to offer such care and compassion to myself.
- I think mindfulness, through the collage practice that I was using, was just so so huge and such a gift that I could give myself. So there are so many examples, which is why I love this work. But absolutely, it's helped me emotionally tune in and notice what's happening with my emotions and not have as much judgment, and have more compassion. Because of that, then I'm able to feel more relaxed and less anxious or stressed.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I think the breath is an interesting thing to track and notice how it shifts and changes all the time, and can be amazing feedback for us.
Suggested Resources
Bullying Story
- I was bullied when I was much younger, I had extra weight on me as a kiddo. When I was in elementary school, I would get teased and bullied a lot for my extra weight. For those that were bullying me, I can definitely see that having mindfulness introduced for adults or children when there is bullying could offer a place of awareness of just noticing for them what is happening and awareness of these narratives and tapes that we have, and that there are all these different narratives, and to not have as much judgment around that.
- I think probably the biggest part that comes to mind for me is this resiliency with our nervous system, by having mindfulness and by having that nonjudgment, that perhaps even as a child, I could notice sensations and where I'm feeling anxiety in my body or noticing that I'm holding my breath and have ways that I can take care of myself at that moment and also connect with those who would be supportive for me.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness, that ability to be present and to observe me, makes it a lot easier to not react and for most of us, when we meditate, it's gonna be boring. Once in a while, we have a great moment of no mind or bliss or belonging. But the benefit of doing that practice, even when it's just boring, counting our breath or repeating a mantra, whatever it is, that's the practice. So
- That's sort of learning how to dribble so we can play at the basketball finals or learning the piano chords so that we can do a concert delivery because it's that ability.
- But the mantra it's that boring practice that comes in helpful when we get triggered. And all we need is that moment, that moment of presence, that moment of mindfulness. Oh, whoa, that one hurt. Ooh, that triggered me. And then that brings choice back into the equation. Like then how do I want to respond to this, rather than just that old boring, react, and then regret? Power Matters
Thoughts on Breathing
- It's all about the breath. The breath is at the core of every meditation practice and most spiritual traditions. Let's just think about this example. We're in a conversation that's starting to escalate and kind of about to go south into an argument. That's the moment to use the breath. That's the moment for their Swamis in India that have that much control over their bodies that they can tell their hearts to slow down and they will. So
- Most of us are never going to get there. But every one of us can slow down our breathing. So when we slow down the breath, the heart has no choice but to relax. It has to. And when the heart begins to relax, then the body begins to quiet down. And then the nervous system begins to quiet down as well. Power So Matters
- And then we can make a choice again about how we show up because we're talking about empowerment. So we're not talking about suppressing our emotions, we're not talking about becoming a doormat, we're talking about bringing choice. And using our being able to communicate our emotions responsibly. So
- The emotions aren't good, they're not bad, they're neutral. They're energy. What used to be spiritual teaching, is that everything is energy. Now we know, from quantum physics, it's all energy, including the body, and the emotions. And the problem that we have with suppressing emotions is that they don't go away. So

Bullying Story
- I talked about the US as an example that after 911 we had the goodwill of the entire world on our side. Because this was such a shocking, unimaginable affront. And so we had a choice point, like how do we express power? And what do we do? We abused it, we bullied, and nobody likes a bully. And we went and invaded a country that we had no business invading, and we're still paying the price for doing that. So
- 20 years later, or 30 years later, however long it's been, I guess 20-something years later. From a personal perspective, I share a story about when I was in 10th grade and I just started a new school that was all boys and it was a Catholic school, a Jesuit school.
- So I was going through the difficult times the kids go through; not feeling accepted. Who am I? All that kind of stuff. And there was a kid in my class that everybody bullied and not in a mean way. I mean not in a bad way it wasn't like physical bullying, but it was like mind games. So
- I learned about bullying and that there was a part of me that didn't feel accepted, that didn't feel good about myself. Because I was struggling with issues of deep existential questions, the questions of who am I and do I belong in this religion in which I was raised, where I had this part of me that I wanted to serve the sacred. I wanted to serve God as I understood it then. And yet in a religion that told me that I was gonna burn in hell for eternity, for being who I am. And so, rather than deal with those difficult, painful emotions, it was easier to focus on somebody else. So
- I think that's what a lot of bullying has to do with. It is sort of a displacement of negative feelings for ourselves and then finding somebody who's weaker. I'm hoping that in telling the story, I'm helping other people. So

Effect on Emotions
- For me, it is about really being aware of emotions. And then going that extra step. What did I just do to make that emotion happen? Because thought influences emotion.
Thoughts on Breathing
- So important. Because whenever we get stressed, we all go shallow breathing and I sometimes recommend that people just stick a few post-it notes around their house or their apartment. And whenever you see one of those, breathe those notes. Take a deep breath. A New Context To Grief
Suggested Resources

Bullying Story
- As a child, I got bullied a lot because you wouldn't know it today. Today, I'm very tall but I was always the smallest and the skinniest kid in the class. There was a classic bully and I got bullied a lot by her as all children probably did. I thought if I only found a way to please her so that then she'd approve of me, then the bullying would stop.
- If I had been able to just mindfully zoom out of that situation and imagine all of those different situations being played out on a movie screen, for example, I would have probably come to the realization that no matter what little me did, I wasn't ever going to get her approval. A New Context To Grief
- If I had just had that mindfulness approach and just gone – hang on a minute, just take many, many steps back, just see the big picture here. And oh, come back to you. That has made a huge difference. A New Context To Grief

Effect on Emotions
- As someone who battles depression, it is an ongoing struggle. I have so much empathy for people that also battle it and don't have the tools that I have. Even today, I'm going through some conflicts at home and some relationship issues. I am trying to make space for the feelings I'm having. Those feelings are not me; they are thoughts I'm having about myself and my role in my family and my work life.
- I can't listen to the stories that I'm telling myself right now because they're toxic and terrible. They're going to perpetuate more stagnation, so I'm trying hard today to create that space and allow for a separation between who I am and what I'm experiencing because they are very different, no matter how much the story I'm telling myself is that they are one and the same.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I actually breathe in a very specific pattern before and after meetings. If I just have an anxious moment, I do something called Box Breathing. You inhale to a count of five, four, or five; you hold it at the top for four or five; you exhale for four or five; hold it at the bottom for four or five and repeat that.
- All it takes is maybe even just a minute and a half of doing that. But ideally, you want to do it for about five minutes. That actually activates your vagus nerve and starts to reduce or start to activate your calming across your entire body. It's one of the most amazing things that I've ever discovered. And it's free, and it's built-in already.

Bullying Story
- In seventh grade, one of my friends, Eric went around pantsing everybody all the time That was his thing; he would run up and just drop someone's pants to humiliate them. Everyone would laugh. One day, I decided I was gonna get him back for everybody that he had done in the past. The guy was devastated, and he went to the principal to tattle on me, so I got detention. I laughed the whole time because I was like, you get what you get, you know. But in retrospect, that wasn't the right thing to do. You know, I humiliated somebody. No matter how much pain he brought to others, I should have had more compassion. But I was a seventh grader. I was a dope.
- I actually had an interesting experience one year where all of my friends turned against me. I'd find random things in my locker that should not have been there. It was very weird, but it all disappeared the next year.
- Looking back, I guess I was bullied for the year. And then I went and worked with my dad, who was a house painter. And if anyone has ever painted a room, you know, there's nothing more monotonous than painting a room. You need to be present, and you need to know where the brush is going. He was an old-school house painter. And I don't think I realized then that I spent the whole summer being mindful.
- When school started again, I just didn't care. I walked in and was like; I'm okay; life is life. And everyone saw that what they were doing to me wasn't bothering me anymore. And then everything just kind of turned around.

Monday Nov 21, 2022
Ken W. Stone is known as ‘The Soul Archaeologist’ and is a spiritual messenger, author, and healer. God expresses through Ken in a unique way, specifically when people sit with him in transmission, they have a profoundly different experience of the Divine in their body. For example, he has worked with a number of advanced former students of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who each said, unprompted, following their initial session with him, that was the deepest spiritual experience of my life. Ken shares his gifts with a spiritually diverse, growing international audience through a variety of virtual and in-person programs, retreats, and one-on-one work.

Effect on Emotions
- Being able to shift into that observer and understand; that has been huge for me. I can actually remember when it happened. Dan Millman's book, The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior; I woke up spiritually when I was reading that book. I read that book about a year before I learned about my spiritual gifts.
- It was in the fall of 2006, and I'd read Buddhist philosophies for years and not understood it. Why are we contemplating death; what is this whole thing? I thought of it as a scene where he could see his body decomposing in a field and it just snapped. There it is.
- That was the first conscious awareness that I had of this dynamic that I had been trying to work with for a long time. So
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is the opening. It's the constant companion. If somebody comes to me and says, ‘I feel wrapped up in this noise, what's the first thing I could do?' I want to talk about soul embodiment which is one of the things that I think just naturally happens, the divine through me.
- And if they say, ‘what do I do there?', I say, ‘let's just do some breathing to start'.

Bullying Story
- My family moved from Iowa to Boulder Colorado the summer before my seventh grade. I was profoundly naive when I was going into seventh grade; I was very tall and was kind of a beanpole.
- I must have made a very attractive target to one particular person who threw me into lockers in the locker room and some of his friends held me down in shop class and he hit me on the head with the handle end of a screwdriver. I don't remember it affecting my internal narrative.
- Mindfulness would have supported me in being able to be more fully present in the experience for sure at that place in my life. I can see it so essentially today for adolescents because there seems to be this huge focus on the external as the source of meaning, and so bullying just amplifies that dynamic. And what more powerful resource is there than mindfulness in counteracting that dynamic?

Effect on Emotions
- I deal with my emotions and writing in this little tiny book helps me. When I have a bad day, one of those days where I feel like nothing's going right. Rather than turn to a book, I sit down, and I write. And I'll just fill these pages. I can write really big, I can write angry; that's better than typing. because I can do what I want to. When I'm upset I can really get my emotions out. So
- I get it all out, and it gets it out of my system. It's a purging. Then I tear the pages out and burn them because it's not for anybody else. It's me getting rid of it. So
Thoughts on Breathing
- I don't really do so many breathing techniques, but I will tell you something I do to relax. I lay back, because sometimes as a creative, just thinking, just sitting down and being alone with your thoughts matters. And what I do is I'll lay back and I'll take a towel and put it over my eyes like a blindfold. I shut out all the light so I can just be alone in my thoughts, or I'll use music to go along with that. So I can just sort of ease myself in so I think more than I concentrate on what's going on up here. Not so much of the breathing, but just on getting calm and focused. So

Bullying Story
- One of the stories that I tell people was, I had this kid who was a few years ahead of me, a big guy, pick me up and hang me on the wall on the coat hangers by my belt loops in the hallway, and I couldn't get out, I'm stuck. So to this day, I can hear the laughter of the kids. And it's very, very painful. In that situation, there's not much you can do, but then you flash forward. So
- The first boss I had in television news; he was just not a nice guy. The kind who would sit you down and stand over the desk and lean over you and talk down to you and be really stern, and at the time, I didn't know what to do with that. But with the mindfulness that I now that I have, I would do one of two things.
- I would either stand up and say, when you sit, I'll sit. Or I'd leave. When you decide to calm down, I'll come talk to you. Because that's just something I can't abide by anymore. And I think if I'd had more awareness about me; if I had had a little more confidence about myself because it's funny that stuff sticks, you know, people don't think it does. When you meet a bully even as an adult, you still kind of cower back. So
