Water and mindfulness; such a great combination. I never realized how much water could help me relax, especially just by going for a walk by the river or going to the lake. Water has an effect that is not easy to describe. Lao Tzu talks a lot about water in the Tao Ta Ching. In case you’re not familiar with it, the Tao Ta Ching is an ancient Chinese text dating back to the 4th century BC. Dr. Wayne Dyer studied it in detail and wrote an essay on each verse of the Tao Ta Ching. He then published it as a book called, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life. Water helps me relax in a deep, thorough way. The Relax and Breathe Summit reminds me of the soothing, relaxing effect that water has on me. With less stress, I can relax and breathe more deeply.
I’m pleased to be a guest on the Relax and Breathe Summit with Pompe Strater-Vidal. She is a Zen monk and a truly relaxed person. You might want to plan to enjoy the free Relax and Breathe Summit in July by signing up here: www.relaxandbreathesummit.com

Quotes:
- Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself? Lao Tzu – The Tao Te Ching
- Running water never grows stale. So you just have to keep on flowing. – Bruce Lee
- Just as you wash your hands before eating, clear your mind before engaging with the world. Mooji
- Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the wise man, gathering it little by little, fills himself with good. – The Buddha
- Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. Put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or creep or drip or crash. Be water my friend. Bruce Lee.

Advice for Newbie
Mindfulness has so many different perspectives depending on who you talk to and how they apply it. For me, I just get quiet and just live in the now. Most of us live our lives in the light of the past or the future. We live in the past in either shame or victim mentality, or something devastating happened and that holds us back. We become victim to that in our own mindset, that becomes one prison. Or the 'good old days', we wish we could go back to the good times. That holds us back from what's in front of us.
In front of us we often look at certain goals or what we want to accomplish and we say, 'I'll be happy when ...'. It could be a home, a job, an income. Anytime you have these goals, they can just become a bottomless well. Instead of looking at the past or the future for happiness, happiness is actually in the present. In the present you can find yourself going to a place of being grateful for the people in your life.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has allowed me to get my emotions in check, and emotions that were otherwise way out control. It gave me the opportunity to pause and take stock of where I was and what I needed to do.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is probably the foundation of my mindfulness practice. Simply the act of taking a deep breath when I think something or I am racing gives me enough pause to stop and really determine what the right action is. I've always learned in order to change directions you have to stop first and you know my brain doesn't know how to stop without physical queues. Taking a deep in-breath and blowing it out is a significant part of that stopping. Similar to my concept of spirituality is I breathe in the universe and I breathe out Michael. Just that simple visualization of Michael being that out of control, out of touch set of emotions in my body, I simply breathe in the peace that is out there and I breathe out myself.

Advice for Newbie
- I have learned that mindfulness doesn't require fancy outfits and renovated rooms in your house and expensive teachers. I believe that the practice of mindfulness is as fast as sitting at a red light and taking a deep breath, and it can be practiced anywhere at anytime. You receive immediate benefits from it and there is no wrong way of doing it.

It takes time. It's not going to just happen for you. You have to understand that everything that you experience in life has shaped who you are. And it's shaped who you are for a reason. And you need to try to understand that reason.

Effect on Emotions
- I am more able to observe my emotion, I'm more calm and I don't react in an intense, volcanic way like I used to when I was younger. I can really observe scenarios and say okay you know what this is really upsetting me because xyz is that what you meant and then the other person says no that's not what I meant. I can talk through things without having an intense, emotional reaction and I think that is from being so mindful and all the meditation work that I have done.

Advice for Newbie
- Be patient please. I find so often that people have so many questions i.e. Am I doing it right? Just observe your emotions and trust that you will get it right. Keep at it, don't stop every day or so to observe whether it's working, just keep going.

Consistency paired with mindfulness will help you achieve your most important goals. Stick with it. I'm sure you've heard that plenty of times. Consistency can be one of the trickiest concepts, because as humans, we tend to see things differently depending on our mood and the world around us. When you decide on a goal, it is important to also decide at the same time to be consistent.
Create a habit to help you achieve your goal and keep that habit going. Be consistent and you will notice you'll start to do the action like its on auto pilot. This is what I found when I was learning to play the piano, then later the accordion and saxophone. Sometimes my mind would tell me the song was too hard, I'd never get the rhythms, and I might as well give up. In spite of those voices, I'd usually end up practicing anyway, and by being consistent, putting in the time and sticking with it, I'd eventually learn to play the piece of music I was working on.
Quotes:
- “Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life.” Anthony Robbins
- It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently. Tony Robbins
- If you are persistent you will get it. If you are consisted your will keep it. Anon
- Consistency is not perfection. It is simply refusing to give up. Tina Reale
- Consistent action creates consistent results. Christine Kane
- We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle

Effect on Emotions
- It definitely makes me much more even keeled. Since I started meditating I would say that I am much better able to handle the ups and down's of life much more quickly and have a better response to them.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I am one of those people who probably holds my breath and gets way too intense in the moment at times. I think for me the number one thing is when I catch myself holding my breath and being so over the top intense, just taking a deep breath and just slowing down and decompressing. Also walking away from things for a minute so that I can gain some perspective, then revisiting them is the way I have to handle that.

Advice for Newbie
- I would say get started on doing what comes naturally to you. If you like to walk outside, go for a walk and instead of listening to the radio or listening to music just say for ten minutes I am going to get still and present and just count my blessings. Find something that is a match for your personality for what's most comfortable for you. Definitely give yourself an opportunity to take a couple minutes for reflection everyday in a way that feels right for you that incorporates in your life. It will absolutely have an affect on not only your success but also your happiness.
